PRESS RELEASE: House Leaders Appoint Vela to Special Task Force on Foreign Fighters

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, was recently appointed by leaders on the House Homeland Security Committee to a bipartisan Task Force on Combating Terrorist and Foreign Fighter Travel.

“The work that we do will have a direct impact on the battlefield and the safety of Americans, both at home and abroad,” said U.S. Rep. Vela. “By denying foreign fighters and terrorists the freedom of movement, through smart and effective American policy, we can more easily degrade and destroy the ability of extremists groups like ISIS.”

The special task force was created in response to the threat from extremists fighting overseas and the danger they pose in the United States.  The bipartisan Task Force is comprised of five Republicans and three Democrats, and is tasked with assessing the U.S. government’s efforts to obstruct terrorist travel and to keep violent extremists from entering the United States.

“The danger of foreign fighters inspired by terrorist ideology is clear and alarming and we must do what we can to prevent them from promoting and carrying out lone wolf-style attacks in the US and abroad," said Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, U.S. Rep. Bennie G. Thomson "The new Task Force will allow our committee to take a more precise look into this vexing problem, and I look forward to receiving the final recommendations from the Task Force and working with Congressman Vela on what we can do next.”

The Task Force will meet with government agencies, top officials, outside experts, and others to generate policy solutions and develop legislative recommendations to mitigate threats to the United States.

Other members of the task force are: U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas; U.S. Rep. John Katko, R-New York ; U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., U.S. Rep. Martha McSally, R-Ariz.; U.S. Rep. Donald Payne, Jr., D-N.J.; U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-California; and U.S. Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Texas.
