WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) announced that the Department of the Interior has awarded five counties in the 34th District of Texas $2.8 million to support coastal conservation and restoration projects, hurricane protection programs, and activities to implement marine and coastal resilience management plans.

 

These federal funds are distributed through the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) and determined based on oil and gas production revenue of each county. A breakdown of the funds is below: 

  • Cameron County 

$786,227.41 

  • Kenedy County   

$753,718.26 

  • Kleberg County 

$544,408.67 

  • San Patricio County 

$353,887.89 

  • Willacy County   

$437,625.63

“Communities on the coast have been severely impacted by natural disasters, ” said CongressmanFilemon Vela. “These funds play an important role in conserving wildlife habitats of South Texas’ coastline. I am pleased that GOMESA continues to offer support to these vulnerable areas.”
