WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) announced that the U.S. Department of Education has recognized four schools in Texas’ 34th district as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2021. Gallegos Elementary School and Mittie A Pullam Elementary School in Brownsville, South Texas ISD Rising Scholars Academy in San Benito, and Zeferino Farias Elementary School in Alamo were chosen based on their overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among their students.

These four exemplary local schools will join 325 public and private schools across the country at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November where they will be presented with an award plaque and flag to commemorate their accomplishments.  The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.

“Congratulations to these schools and their school districts for receiving this national recognition,” said Rep. Vela. “I applaud the teacher and administrators of each school for their outstanding efforts to nurture, teach and train our future leaders. During the pandemic, educators and students have faced countless setbacks and I am proud that these institutions have shined through and are recognized for their hard work and successes.”
