PRESS RELEASE: Vela Announces $8.2M Grant For Su Clinica

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Awards Grant Funding

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, announced that Su Clinica, a community health center, was awarded an $8,277,730 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant is part of a yearly funding package Su Clinica receives to provide affordable healthcare for South Texans.

“The hard work and dedication of Su Clinica's employees and volunteers helps ensure that South Texas families have access to healthcare,” said U.S. Rep. Vela.  "Community-based healthcare clinics connect working families with affordable preventative care and treatment for chronic conditions. Continued federal funding will allow Su Clinica to provide high quality healthcare to thousands of South Texans.”

Su Clinica is a non-profit organization providing primary healthcare services through clinics in Brownsville, Harlingen, Raymondville and Santa Rosa, Texas. Its mission is to promote a healthier community by providing access to high quality, comprehensive medical care, health education and support services. Su Clinica has served the community as an accredited organization since 1971.

“Continued funding for Su Clinica is great news for South Texas because it means that over 34,000 Rio Grande Valley residents will continue to have affordable access to healthcare,” said Su Clinica CEO, Elena Marin, M.D. “Without access to primary care through community health centers, many people, including the chronically ill, delay seeking healthcare until they are seriously ill and require hospitalization or care or go to the emergency room at a much higher cost.”
