VELA URGES GOVERNOR ABBOTT TO INCLUDE CAMERON, HIDALGO, KENEDY AND WILLACY COUNTIES IN PREEMPTIVE STATE OF DISASTER DECLARATION

Washington, DC - Today, Representative Filemon Vela (D–Brownsville) addressed a letter to Governor Greg Abbott urging him to include the counties of Cameron, Hidalgo, Kenedy and Willacy to the preemptive State of Disaster Declaration.

August 24, 2017

The Honorable Greg Abbott
Governor
State of Texas
Office of the Governor
P.O. Box 12428
Austin, Texas 78711-2428

Dear Governor Abbott:

Thank you for your preemptive State of Disaster declaration in preparation for the threats posed by Hurricane Harvey. This proactive declaration will ensure that resources are quickly deployed for the emergency response effort in anticipation of the hurricane’s landfall. As we prepare for Hurricane Harvey, I write to ask you to include Cameron, Hidalgo, Kenedy, and Willacy Counties in the preemptive State of Disaster Declaration.

The path of the hurricane still remains uncertain and Harvey continues to gain strength, possibly making landfall as a category three hurricane. This would be the largest hurricane to hit the United States coastline in twelve years. Cameron, Hidalgo, Kenedy and Willacy counties are very near to the projected path of the hurricane and are very susceptible to severe damages caused by flooding, storm surge, and high winds. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), seven to fifteen inches of rain are expected to fall between the areas of Brownsville and Corpus Christi and flash flooding can aggravate the damage.

I urge you to add Cameron, Hidalgo, Kenedy and Willacy counties to the preemptive State of Disaster Declaration so that resources can be quickly deployed to South Texans. Please contact me if you have any additional question or require additional information.

Sincerely,

FILEMON VELA
Member of Congress
