PRESS RELEASE: Vela Secures $24 million for Brownsville Airport

Brownsville— Representative Filemon Vela (D-TX) has secured additional federal investment for the new passenger terminal project at the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO), in addition to the $14 million previously committed. Representative Vela worked with key Members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the FAA to increase funding for one of the region’s most critical infrastructure projects. As of today, the FAA has awarded an additional $10 million for the Brownsville airport terminal project. Further funding became necessary after local estimates increased from $30 million to $55 million for added improvements and necessary construction.  

“This project is key for South Texas, and the $24 million in federal funding is critical to ensuring this project finally comes to fruition,” Representative Vela said. “The new terminal will provide better access to the region, boost economic activity, and vastly improve the passenger experience at BRO.”

Federal funding will be used for the demolition of the old terminal and construction of the new terminal and outside infrastructure including ramps and roads.
