Press Release: Vela Named Vice Ranking Member of House Agriculture Committee

Washington, DC –  Representative Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) was elected Vice Ranking Member of the House Committee on Agriculture by the Democratic membership of the committee. The role of Vice Ranking Member was created by the Democratic Caucus earlier this year in order to provide more leadership opportunities for newer members.

"It is an honor to be elected as Vice Ranking Member of the Agriculture Committee, and I am thankful that Ranking Member Collin Peterson and my other colleagues on the committee have entrusted me with this position," said Rep. Vela. "This is an excellent opportunity to ensure South Texas agricultural issues such as fever tick, citrus greening and cotton rise to the forefront of the committee’s agenda."

“Congressman Vela understands agriculture and nearly every issue overseen by the Agriculture Committee resonates in his district. Congressman Vela’s district is on the Mexico border while my district stretches north to Canada so I think we will be a good balance when drafting farm and food policy. I look forward to working together this Congress,” Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Collin Peterson said.

"Those of us involved in agriculture in South Texas know Congressman Vela as a friend and genuine supporter of agriculture," said Dave Delaney, Vice President & General Manager of Ranching and Wildlife at King Ranch, Inc. "He has taken a keen interest in learning our businesses and the challenging issues which confront us, regardless of the agricultural sector in which we participate. Throughout our fight against the Cattle Fever Tick, we have especially appreciated his ongoing efforts to educate and inform his Committee and Congress in general as to the challenges and hardships being endured by producers affected by this pest. Congressman Vela has never failed to engage his staff or meet with his constituency when the need arose. We very much look forward to working with Congressman Vela in the future and congratulate him for this well-deserved position."

Dale Murden, President of Texas Citrus Mutual added, "Congratulations to Congressman Filemon Vela for his selection to serve as Vice Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee for the 115th Congress.  Congressman Vela continually demonstrates his genuine interest in policy and actions taken by Congress that impact South Texas Agriculture.  His dedication will serve the committee and the State of Texas well as it begins deliberations on the next farm bill"

"On behalf of the Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers, I congratulate Congressman Vela on his new role as Vice Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee," said Sean Brasher, President & CEO of Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers. "Congressman Vela takes the time to understand the issues important to South Texas agriculture, and his leadership and knowledge will serve the Committee, his district and the State of Texas well."

In addition to serving as the Vice Ranking Member of the Agriculture Committee, Congressman Vela will sit on the Livestock & Foreign Agriculture and Conservation & Forestry subcommittees.
