PRESS RELEASE: Congressman Vela Announces Federal Funds for Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport

Washington D.C. – Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) announced today that the Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) has been awarded $250,000 in federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).

The federal funds will allow BRO to become more closely integrated with the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston by increasing United Airlines service and capacity by 33 percent. The project has enjoyed support from stakeholders in the area who believe that it will bring increased economic activity to the region.

“The Small Community Air Service Development Program grant award will help make South Texas much more accessible to visitors. The increased air traffic between Brownsville and Houston will also give travelers greater access to nation-wide and global travel opportunities. I am proud to have been an early supporter of this project and look forward to seeing it develop,” Congressman Vela said.

Bryant Walker, Director of the Brownsville International Airport added, “The grant from USDOT will allow the airport to promote access to the RGV and all that the region has to offer. These grants are very competitive, and the airport is grateful and honored to have been selected. We are excited to begin working with the airline and local entities to drive air connectivity and economic development to the region.”

Supporters of the project hope that the increased integration of regional airports will help draw visitors from all over the world to see what South Texas has to offer.
