MEDIA ADVISORY: Congressman Vela to Attend Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Spanish Language Severe Weather Early Warning System for the Lower Rio Grande Valley
WASHINGTON, DC – Tomorrow, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) will attend a ribbon cutting ceremony announcing a Spanish Language Severe Weather Early Warning System for the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The regional system will further expand the translation of early warning messages from English to Spanish and will assist Local Emergency Management Officials, The State of Texas, and the National Weather Service (NWS) broadcast early warning messages of impending severe weather as well as relaying other important information such as coastal and inland evacuations. The system will serve those who live in Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy Counties. Only El Paso, Texas, San Diego, California and Miami Dade, Florida have similar systems.
“The implementation of a Spanish Language Severe Weather Early Warning System for the Lower Rio Grande Valley will make our communities safer—ensuring that important messages are received by the public,” said Congressman Vela. “I thank all those who helped bring this system to South Texas including the National Weather Service, Senator Lucio, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council and the cities of Weslaco and Pharr.”
