Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (TX-34) joined his colleagues in voting in favor of overriding President Donald Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2021. The measure successfully passed the House with over two-thirds bipartisan support. The Senate is expected to start the processes of overriding the President’s veto tomorrow, December 29th

The NDAA for fiscal year 2021 authorizes $740 billion for national defense spending and sets policies affecting every aspect of military activities. The bill passed both chambers with broad bipartisan support earlier this month with 335 members of the House and 84 Senators voting in favor of it. The legislation was sent to the President’s desk on December 11th and disgracefully vetoed December 23rd.

“The House of Representatives had well over two-thirds majority support when we passed the NDAA bill earlier this month, sending a clear message to the President that the national security of our country and the well-being of all who wear our nation’s uniform is not to be messed with,” said Congressman Filemon Vela. “The President’s decision to veto this important piece of legislation threatened to undermine our national security preparedness and jeopardize the jobs of Americans who make up our defense industrial base at a time when the country is already in crisis. Today’s vote sends a resounding message to Americans everywhere that we stand by our military personnel and their families. I hope my colleagues in the Senate join us by also overriding this veto and solidifying this piece of legislation into law for the 60thconsecutive year.”
