PRESS RELEASE: Vela Legislation Will Return Land Controlled by Army Corps Back to Port of Brownsville

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Filemon Vela (D-Brownsville) secured passage of an amendment to the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) that reverts easements on land under the control of the Army Corps of Engineers back to the Port of Brownsville.

The WRDA bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday night by a vote of 399 to 25.

“The Port of Brownsville has the ability to grow and more land is needed for future projects,” U.S. Rep. Vela said. “These additional land tracts allow the Port of Brownsville to bring in new business that in the long run will help create jobs and economic opportunity for people in South Texas.”

“The seven land tracts belong to the Port of Brownsville and have been under the control of the Army Corps for decades,” Vela said. “The easements were originally granted to the Army Corps in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, but have never been used. This amendment allows for an expedited process to revert this land back to the Port of Brownsville.”

Port of Brownsville Port Director and CEO Eduardo Campirano welcomed the news about the easements, which positively impact the ability to grow the port.

“This is about economic development and we thank Congressman Vela for helping us secure this land,” Campirano said.
